For Gen Z, sustainability and the environment have almost become a mission. As in the earlier generations, the life cycle of a traveller determines what they see and where they go. However, this generation is the first where infinity pools or pillow menus no longer only define luxury—it is about meaning, mindfulness, and connection. “As a co-founder of a conscious travel venture, I have seen this shift firsthand: young travellers are less interested in opulence for its own sake and more drawn to experiences that root them in the culture of a place,” says Mallika Sheth, co-founder, Tealfeel.
At the heart of this transformation lies the desire for authenticity and being real. Gen Z values purpose and storytelling. It is a reflection of current times and how they view the world. “They don’t just want to visit a destination—they want to engage with it. Whether it’s helping on a community farm in Spiti, attending a weaving workshop with artisans in Kutch, or joining conservation walks in Kabini, they’re choosing immersive, people-first experiences over traditional itineraries with a focus on sights,” adds Sheth.
Sheth believes this has led to a rise in slow travel, regenerative tourism, and boutique stays that integrate sustainability and local collaboration at every step. In fact, what was once considered “alternative” is now aspirational.
For Gen Z, the luxury of tomorrow is about belonging, not bragging rights. It is about coming home from a trip with new perspectives, not just souvenirs. Moreover, that, to me, is a hopeful and exciting future for travel.
