The MET Gala 2024 was a big win for the Indian fashion industry! World-renowned couturier Sabyasachi Mukherjee made history by being the first Indian fashion designer to walk the iconic Met Gala carpet.
Indian celebrities such as Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Deepika Padukone, and Alia Bhatt have graced the iconic stairs in their custom-made couture over the years, but having an Indian fashion designer walk on the carpet is definitely iconic. Sabyasachi graced the Met Gala 2024 carpet dressed in an embroidered cotton duster coat from the Sabyasachi Resort 2024 collection layered with tourmalines, pearls, emeralds and diamonds from Sabyasachi High Jewellery.
Before his debut, Sabyasachi designs found its moment on the 2022 MET Gala carpet when Natasha Poonawalla celebrated the Sabyasachi couture saree, and in 2024, Alia Bhatt walked in a dreamy tulle embroidered Sabyasachi saree. Sabyasachi has always been the perfect cheerleader for the Indian drape and has always celebrated the six yards of sheer elegance on various global platforms. When Natasha wore the Schiaparelli hand-forged metal bustier with Sabyasachi’s couture sari and trail, the designer was elated to have the sari on the Met Gala carpet. Sabyasachi took to Instagram and expressed: “For me, the sari is a truly unique and versatile garment that owns its identity even as it transcends boundaries and geographies. Back when I was a young fashion student, I often wondered when I would see the sari at big global fashion events like the Met Gala.”
2025 marks 25 years of brand Sabyasachi, and if the rumours are right, Sabyasachi may be designing for a Bollywood superstar at the MET Gala 2025. While we wait and watch what May 5 has in store, here’s what the MET Gala theme is all about. According to The MET, the dress code for the evening is ‘Tailored for You,’ a nod to the exhibition’s focus on suiting and menswear—from specific silhouettes to various fabrics and accessories—that is purposefully designed to both provide guidance and invite creative interpretation.
Each year, the dress code takes inspiration from the exhibition theme and references ideas explored in the show. The Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, will be on at The Met Fifth Avenue from May 10 to October 26, 2025. This year’s Met Gala co-chairs include Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, and honorary chair LeBron James.
