The iPhone 17 Air model is expected to be Apple’s big promise for the future, something that we saw with the iPhone X series many years back. The new sleek model is being heavily reported which clearly means the product is the real deal and will be launching later this year.
It seems the company is eyeing the future with the 17 Air version and not heavily invested in making it a success in 2025 or 26 going by most details coming out in the last few weeks.
The 17 Air model will be sleek and some of the leaked visuals have even showed us how it looks compared to the iPhone 16 Pro slab model. But this is Apple and the company usually has a way around with its customers. Can it pull it off with the iPhone 17 Air once again, we have some doubts about it.
The Big Risk Of Being Sleek
The iPhone 17 Air model is expected to get a 5.5mm frame, the thinnest Apple has ever made for its iPhones. However, the sleek design will be developed at the cost of a single camera, a smaller capacity battery and possibly missing out on the regular SIM slot.
The company could replace the Plus with the Air model from 2025 onwards, but the premium to be paid for this variant could be far higher than what people would be willing to pay for these obvious deficiencies.
The Early Hype
Apple launching a foldable or a sleek device gathers interest so the hype around the iPhone 17 Air was hardly surprising. However, the company has been making some uncharacteristic moves in the last few years which is why our confidence around the 17 Air being a runaway hit is low. More importantly, reports this week suggest Apple is not going gung-ho over the production plans for the 17 Air and will probably decide on that closer to the launch and pre-order dates.
Apple is also expected to replace a not-so-popular Plus variant, which came through after testing the market with the Mini variant. So it feels like the 17 Air is destined to exist in the lineup among the big stars and just add some bling to the company’s rather muted series.
The Big Price Conundrum
The iPhone Plus sits between the regular and the Pro variant in the lineup so far. And if the Plus gives way for the Air this year, we expect a similar strategy. However, the 17 Air comes with a host of promising and underwhelming features, with a sleek design that Apple would surely want to sell as a premium part of the device.
The iPhone 16 Plus comes for Rs 89,900 in the market from the company, can Apple afford a similar range for the 17 Air or go well over Rs 1 lakh to manage its demand and also in-house capability.
There is a lot that we still don’t know about the iPhone 17 Air variant but it is good to finally have so many questions that only Apple can answer when the product is unveiled.
